{"id":1265,"date":"2011-05-09T01:11:44","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T01:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/labrigger.com\/blog\/?p=1265"},"modified":"2011-05-08T21:12:08","modified_gmt":"2011-05-08T21:12:08","slug":"datas-killer-app","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/labrigger.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/09\/datas-killer-app\/","title":{"rendered":"Data&#8217;s killer app"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the topic of the <a href=\"http:\/\/labrigger.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/08\/apps\/\">recent app post<\/a>, I&#8217;ve been thinking about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/pkeane\/2010\/01\/01\/what-is-datas-killer-app\/\">an old blog post from Peter Keane<\/a>. The of his post is, &#8220;What is Data\u2019s Killer App?&#8221; In it, he pondered the problem of data management.<\/p>\n<p>After a not entirely apt analogy to HTML, Keane suggested that there is no killer app coming. Instead,  &#8220;our solution will likely be a set of protocols, formats, and practices all of which will enable the creation of end-user applications that can &#8216;hide the plumbing.'&#8221; I think that&#8217;s a valuable insight and I submit that <em>it already exists<\/em>. Moreover, people are already migrating to it. Just not in any organized way.<\/p>\n<p>I suggest that this is a minimal skeleton for data and lab management upon which most comprehensive solutions can be built:<\/p>\n<li>For protocols and other miscellaneous information: <strong>a lab wiki<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Primary data should be stored in, or referenced by, <strong>XML files<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Standard collaborative tools<\/strong> should be used where appropriate. E.g., Google Docs, MS Office, Zoho, Buzzword, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Standard databases tools<\/strong> should be used for organization of stereotyped datasets. That means mySQL-based tools like dbForge, or Filemaker, or the like.
