It&#8217;s older than <em>Nature<\/em> (1879), <em>Science<\/em> (1880), and <em>American Scientist<\/em> (1913). It was originally an academic journal, before it split into two parts, with the academic portion eventually being absorbed into <em>Science<\/em>. It&#8217;s high quality scientific journalism for a broad audience.<\/p>\n<p>So I was interested to read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/science\/article\/2013-09\/why-were-shutting-our-comments\">their explanation<\/a> for the most recent change to their website:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Comments can be bad for science. That&#8217;s why, here at PopularScience.com, we&#8217;re shutting them off.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>tl;dr: Comments can be bad for science? The operative word is &#8220;can&#8221;, and they back up their decision. Essentially they argue that people are impressionable (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/08\/22\/opinion\/welcome-to-the-age-of-denial.html\">and anti-science is a problem<\/a>), and since the magazine cannot ensure balance in comments, they&#8217;ll just go without and let the discussions play out on other online forums.<\/p>\n<p>For the forseeable future, Labrigger will keep comments on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/labrigger.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/popsci.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The magazine <em>Popular Science<\/em> dates back to 1872.
