However, I still don&#8217;t recommend buying your own 3D printer. Use a service instead (e.g., <a href=\"http:\/\/labrigger.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/22\/ponoko-starts-3d-printing\/\">Ponoko<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/labrigger.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/02\/shapeways-cheap-3d-printing\/\">Shapeways<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/labrigger.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/17\/tips-for-3d-printing\/\">Quickparts<\/a>). Here&#8217;s why:<\/p>\n<h4>1. The technology moves fast.<\/h4>\n<p>What you buy today will be primitive technology in very short order.<\/p>\n<h4>2. Individual machines are limited in what materials they can use.<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>Want to try out 3D printed metal? And plastic? You&#8217;ll probably need two different machines.<\/p>\n<h4>3. Maintenance &#038; materials.<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>The materials aren&#8217;t free, and there&#8217;s a lot that can go wrong with these machines. Their reliability isn&#8217;t typically amazing.<\/p>\n<p>That said, if you have one material you can commit to, and you have a lot of tinkering to do that requires a short turnaround time, then maybe buying your own machine makes sense.
