Gobs of DIY TB storage
Posted in Hardware
These units sell for about $5k, and hold 45 drives. Since 4 TB drives are pretty common these days and cost about $120 each, this scheme can provide about 180 TB for a grand total of (5000 + (45*120)) $10.4k.
It’s an open design and 45drives is a division of Protocase, which Labrigger has mentioned before.
If you want more speed…
Kurt just posted about a drive bay that holds six 2.5″ SSDs.

Limit is 750 GB per SSD.
$70 for the drive bay + (6 * $450 per SSD) = $2770 for 4.5 TB of SSD storage.

…well. You could of course also put a few of these in your PC’s PCI slots:

2TB/sec (!) read and write speed…
4TB would eat up two PCI slots and would set you back 3400EUR. That is if you can get your hands on one, of course.
