Open Ephys
Open Ephys is a well-developed, extensive open hardware solution for extracellular electrophysiology.
Founded by Josh Siegle and Jakob Voigts, its motivation resonantes with Labrigger:
We are not motivated to create new tools for their own sake, but by the need to move our research forward at a tolerable pace. On a daily basis, we find ourselves solving hardware and software problems have been confronted countless times in the past. However, the solutions are often unpublished, inaccessible, or hard to apply in our unique situations. We hope to find a middle ground between turnkey commercial products and custom tools that are used a few times before they become obsolete.
Check out their site. They’ve got a headstage, DAQs, a chronic drive implant (16 independently adjustable electrodes, 64 channels total), and more. It’s a great balance of DIY and open source.
Honestly, this project might meet the Labrigger ideal better than any other we’ve covered.
Hat tip to CSH.
Definitely going to be investigating the Open Ephys platform more. I hope they integrate with the Janelia/Allen/Gatsby/Wellcome/IMEC smartprobes.
Yep, those probes are on our radar. It sounds like it will be a few years before they’re functional, though.
