OSX features I wish Windows had
Posted in Software
Migrating back to Windows after years of using OSX, there are some features I miss.
What are some productivity/OS apps that you like on Windows? AutoHotKey is great. Anything else? Leave your suggestions in the comments.
With no intention of starting a mac vs pc debate: what made you switch? (I assume you switched your laptop – not questioning the need for Windows on lab PCs interfacing instruments)
Collaborative editing of grants and papers requires MS Word. This program is least buggy and quirky on Windows. These OS choices come down to picking the problems one wants to deal with. I was spending too much time dealing with the quirks of MS Word on OSX, so I moved back to the Windows ecosystem. I do alright with Win 8. I can get my work done. But there are still some things I miss from OSX, and that’s why I’m soliciting tips.
Several years ago WINE on OSX running MS word was more stable than the OSX version, but that wasn’t saying much. These days I haven’t found it so bad… Even if it was, why migrate completely to windows? Using a share between OSX and windows and VMWare sound like a much less frustrating choice, presumably one you may already use for CAD software etc.,
True, the VM options aren’t bad. Remote Desktop works fairly well too. I agree, one could go that route as well. This is an important point to make.
It’s not exactly the same as native software, of course. Again, one picks the problems they want to deal with.
Wizmouse is the first thing I install to be able to scroll windows that are not in focus.
I also use Dexpot as an expose alternative.
Teracopy doesn’t really have an alternative for the mac.
Cygwin for the unix goodness.
And chocolatey as a package manager – the mac doesn’t have a good one either.
Nice! Thanks for the tips!
What I miss a lot on a windows machine is that cygwin still is not close to the native *nix environment Mac or linux has.
For chocolatey, have you tried brew and brew cask?
