Superhydrophobic spray-on coating now available
Neverwet is now available for about $20.
This is a spray-on, 2-part superhydrophobic coating (translucent when dry). What would it be useful for in a lab? For starters, spraying it on anything that needs to be cleaned regularly might make it easier to clean. Also, it can vastly improve sample recovery. Leave almost nothing left in the collection chamber.
Other interesting materials mentioned on Labrigger:
Soft raw materials (Sugru, Sylgard, etc.)
DIY Kwik-Cast
Here is a deflationary perspective (via marco.org)
Summary: NeverWet leaves a visible, gummy coating that easily rubs off.

Thanks for the link. It’s a nice reality check.
It might be a bit too hard on NeverWet. But NeverWet certainly deserves some flack for overhyping the product. Their amazing video’s most impressive demos were on fabric and electronics. So it’s pretty egregious for them to put it on sale and state that it’s not for use on fabric or electronics.
F. Manjoo is only the latest in a string of ho-hum reviews for the stuff.
Gizmodo obtained some impressive results, as well as some lackluster ones. They also complained about the lack of durability.

In summary, it might be great in some applications, but try it for yourself, and don’t make plans based off what you see in NeverWet’s marketing video.
