The commoditization of image sensors

About 25 years ago, pro-level audio recording technology was prohibitively expensive for home studios. Then, digital audio technology like the Alesis ADAT enabled working class musicians to produce high fidelity recordings. The fast development of audio recording technology has pushed prices down and performance up to a point where 24-bit/192kHz digitizer kits are cheap, and can be customized for specialized applications.

Image processing has been undergoing a similar transformation, and a recent sign of that is this Kickstarter. This is a high speed camera kit that, for between 300-900 GBP, can offer up to 18,500 frames per second at 64 x 64, or 5,500 frames per second at 256 x 256, or a bunch of other resolution settings.

The Kickstarter is funded, and it’s still open. There is always a risk with these things, and Labrigger can’t vouch for it at all. That said, it doesn’t look bad.
